In 2021, we were estimated to have 12 full moons, 4 “super moons,” and 2 lunar eclipses. This month's full moon is special, as it will be accompanied by a near-total eclipse!
WHEN CAN I SEE THE BEAVER MOON AND ECLIPSE?
Peak illumination will occur around 3:57 am. Of course, it will be pretty full after sunset on Thursday, so little ones with bedtimes can still get to see almost the full effect! The eclipse is expected to occur not too long after, at approximately 4:00 am.
WHY IS IT CALLED A BEAVER MOON?
According to The Old Farmer's Almanac:
"For decades, the Almanac has referenced the monthly full Moons with names tied to early Native American, Colonial American, and European folklore. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred and through all of the Moon’s phases—not only the full Moon.
Why the “Beaver” Moon? This is the time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges, having laid up sufficient stores of food for the long winter ahead. During the time of the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for their thick, winter-ready pelts."
WHAT CAN I DO FOR SOME FAMILY "BEAVER MOON" FUN?
Beyond just going outside to share in the super worm moon viewing, here's a few ideas for ways to engage your kids in the experience:
1. Build Your Own Beaver Lodge -
Gather all your pillows and blankets to build your own beaver lodge. Best part is that they can even hibernate after (AKA quiet time for mom)!
2. Read Good Night Moon -
If it's not already part of your regular reading rotation, now is a great time to break out that copy of this children's bedtime classic. Notice how the moon in the window is different than the moon in the picture in the room. And don't forget to hunt for that little young mouse on every page!
