This year we are expected to experience many amazing full moons. The full moon in April is called the Pink Moon!
WHEN CAN I SEE THE PINK MOON?
On the night of Saturday, April 16th, April’s full moon, traditionally called the pink moon, will rise. It won't be visible above the horizon until after sunset. Find an open area to get the best view of this moon as it rises above the horizon and shines with a golden hue.
WHY IS IT CALLED THE PINK MOON?
According to The Old Farmer's Almanac:
“Although we wish this name had to do with the color of the Moon, the reality is not quite as mystical or awe-inspiring. In truth, April’s full Moon often corresponded with the early springtime blooms of a certain wildflower native to eastern North America: Phlox subulata—commonly called creeping phlox or moss phlox—which also went by the name “moss pink.” Thanks to this seasonal association, this full Moon came to be called the “Pink” Moon!”
PASCHAL FULL MOON
The first full moon of spring is known as the Paschal Full Moon. This would mean that the Pink Moon is this year’s Paschal Full Moon. Fun fact: Easter is always celebrated on the first Sunday after the Paschal Full Moon which is why Easter this year is on April 17th!
WHAT CAN I DO FOR SOME FAMILY "PINK MOON" FUN?
Beyond just going outside to experience the Pink Moon viewing, here's a few ideas for ways to engage your kids in the experience:
1. Make Pink Lemonade -
Making this fun, sweet drink would be both an easy task to do with kids and a fun way to celebrate the Pink Moon together.
2. Read Good Night Moon -
If it's not already part of your regular reading rotation, now is a great time to break out that copy of this children's bedtime classic. Notice how the moon in the window is different from the moon in the picture in the room. And don't forget to hunt for that little young mouse on every page!
