This year we are expected to experience many amazing full moons. The full moon in June is known as the Strawberry Moon!
WHEN CAN I SEE THE STRAWBERRY MOON?
The peak illumination of the Strawberry Moon will be at 7:52 am on Tuesday, June 14th. However, for observers on the East Coast it will be below the horizon when it’s officially full. So, the best time to see the moon is 7:23pm EDT on Tuesday, June 14th. Be patient and look to the Southeast just after sunset. This full moon will appear large and golden.
WHY IS IT CALLED THE STRAWBERRY MOON?
According to The Old Farmer's Almanac:
“June’s full Moon—typically the last full Moon of spring or the first of summer—is traditionally called the Strawberry Moon.
This name has been used by Algonquin, Ojibwe, Dakota, and Lakota peoples, among others, to mark the ripening of “June-bearing” strawberries that are ready to be gathered. The Haida term Berries Ripen Moon reflects this as well. As flowers bloom and early fruit ripens, June is a time of great abundance for many.”
WHAT WILL THIS YEAR’S STRAWBERRY MOON MEAN FOR YOU?
According to Nylon Astrology:
“June 2022’s Full Strawberry Moon in Sagittarius brings extra good luck.”
The zodiac sign known as Sagittarius is symbolized by a centaur ready to aim its arrow at a new destination. Likewise, if you “aim the focus of your arrow”, this full moon can be used to set out on new adventures, expand your knowledge, reach new destinations, and elevate your life during this season of abundance!
WHAT CAN I DO FOR SOME FAMILY STRAWBERRY MOON FUN?
Beyond just going outside to experience the Strawberry Moon viewing, here's a few ideas for ways to engage your kids in the experience:
1. Go Strawberry Picking -
Gather the family to have a fun day strawberry picking! Celebrate the Strawberry Moon by eating your freshly picked strawberries or maybe bake something out of them when you get home!
2. Read Good Night Moon -
If it's not already part of your regular reading rotation, now is a great time to break out that copy of this children's bedtime classic. Notice how the moon in the window is different from the moon in the picture in the room. And don't forget to hunt for that little young mouse on every page!
