Simple, At-home Donut Making Fun from Nani's Corner

Well rounded baking – something to try with the grandkids

By Judy Massey, aka Nani June 3, 2021
I can’t resist a shelf of clearance items in a store. The things that most shoppers found unnecessary attract me: scented thick candles with a crack on the back, perfect note paper in a box that looks like it’s been run over by a truck, a sweet tea cup with no saucer. I might not buy all of those things, but I can enjoy looking.

Something was shining in a heap of kitchen sale items. It was mini baking pan with six small round mold shapes to bake doughnuts. I have never made a doughnut of any kind, and I probably shouldn’t even think of having homemade baked goods to tempt me in my kitchen. The bright orange price tag seemed to vibrate with the numbers: $2.19. Two dollars to try something new. I’m in.

My doughnut mold pan sat on my kitchen counter for under 48 hours, and it called to me. I’d pick it up and examine the tattered paper on it trying to read its promises of washability and non-stickability, and off I went...
1 Search -
I explored the Internet for a baked doughnut recipe and found many. (You can find 7 amazing donut recipes right here.) I knew I had plenty of sugar and cinnamon in the cabinet, so I chose to make cinnamon doughnuts.

6 Shapes -
The batter was too thick to pour into the small molds, but there was a baker’s tip in one of the instructions. I dropped the batter into a thick clear food storage bag, snipped off a corner and squeezed. Like creamy frosting it oozed beautifully into the six circular shapes.

9 Minutes -
After about nine minutes in the oven, I had perfect little delicacies, puffed and slightly brown on their bottoms. The fun part was dipping them in melted butter and rolling them in a bowl of cinnamon and sugar.
Now I consider myself a doughnut maker with dreams of trying almond flour and sliced almonds on the top, or what about savory doughnuts with basil and pepper, maybe a little melted cheese on top? I guess you could say I’ve rounded out my baking skills.

Happy Doughnut Day from Nani!
