Could be a Lucky Day: 13 NON-SCARY Things to Do on Friday 13th

Cats, Stars, Jumping Jacks …. Make it a holiday.

By By Judy Massey aka NANI August 13, 2021

As the summer slowly slides along, and school has not yet started, and the lawn sprinkler has broken, and the bubble machine is empty, it’s time to create a new kind of holiday: Friday the Thirteenth.

This is not packed with horror movies and terrifying superstitions! This is Friday the 13th for family fun.

Here are thirteen non-scary ideas for your own celebration:

  1. Exercise by doing 13 jumping jacks or stretches or hops on one foot.
  2. Create a backyard (or all house) 13 obstacle course. Climb stacks of pillows, scoot under a table. Well, you get the idea.
  3. Bake cookies or muffins. Check out the recipe for these summer berry muffins! Give them away as baker’s dozen (13) gifts.
  4. Sleep out at night and count thirteen stars.
  5. Learn about black cats. Cut paper into 13 strips. Draw a cat image (or paste from a magazine) on each strip. Make a paper chain to decorate a doorway.
  6. Create a kiddie escape room. Choose a theme like trapped in a video game or stranded on an island. Follow 13 clues to “get out.” (This is a good for older kids to create for younger ones.)
  7. Decorate for Halloween. Get ahead of the curve.
  8. Watch fun semi-scary movies like “The Nightmare before Christmas.” (story by Tim Burton)
  9. Is the pool still open? Tread water or float for 13 seconds, 13 minutes? Remember as always, safety first!
  10. Name 13 animals or draw 13 animal images.
  11. Turn your house into a haunted house full of surprises, not terror.
  12. Find 13 books you have read. Make a game of looking only at the back covers and saying the exact title of each book.
  13. Extend the holiday by doing 13 good deeds this week.  They can be as simple as hanging up a jacket, putting a used wrapper in the trash, or giving someone in the family a super hug.
